Why he’s Coach of the Year
The Maroons were solid throughout the season with a deep team. Not only were they runners-up at the Big 12 Championships and won a Class 1A sectional title, but Day is known to make tennis genuinely fun for his athletes.

N-G All-Area Girls' Tennis POY: Centennial's Madison Scaggs and Victoria Gonzalez

CHAMPAIGN — The first meeting at Brixx Wood Fired Pizza was awkward, as would be expected.

Victoria Gonzalez, who had just moved to Champaign from Bolivia, and Madison Scaggs are both reserved upon first meeting someone, although they generally become more outgoing over time.

“I think I was more shy than she was,” Scaggs said.

Future of Villa Grove/Heritage co-op murky

The Villa Grove/Heritage co-op is up for renewal in the spring, but both districts want different things from the co-op moving forward.

Heritage Superintendent Tom Davis said his district would like the co-op to be a full co-op and include volleyball, common colors and a common mascot.

On campus: Neitzel, Pridemore in spotlight

■ Freshman Lauren Neitzel, from Centennial, was named the Newcomer of the Year and to the six-person All-CCIW first team for her performance at the conference championships. Playing at No. 1 singles for Illinois Wesleyan, Neitzel took home third place, as well as taking fourth place at No. 1 doubles. She finished the fall season with a 12-8 record in singles.

Why he was chosen: The junior rushed for 186 yards on 38 carries and three touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the final minute, during the Comets’ 26-24 win against Salt Fork that clinched Oakwood’s first playoff berth since 2010. Oakwood (5-4) travels to Freeport Aquin (8-1) for a Class 1A first-round playoff game at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
